Despite cacao's global value ranging from 8 to 10 billion USD annually, the majority of cacao farmers live below the poverty line, earning less than 2 USD per day. Selling higher-quality cacao presents an opportunity to ensure a living wage for farmers, as the market for this cacao is bound to increase up to 15% by 2030. Currently, the understanding of the different factors affecting quality at each stage of cacao production is insufficient, which is why in 2009, the Cacao of Excellence Programme emerged as a collaborative initiative to address this gap. Throughout the years, the Programme developed the capacity and tools for evaluating cacao quality and established a system to preserve and recognize cacao diversity and quality globally.
Building on these achievements, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT seeks to amplify the impact of the Cacao of Excellence Programme. Their goal is to catalyze the transformation of land and agri-food systems to enhance livelihoods and resilience from farmers to consumers.

Herencia-VL has been tasked with developing a new strategy to maximize the potential of the Cacao of Excellence Programme. This strategy incorporates input from all stakeholders. As a result, the Cacao of Excellence Programme is evolving into a project that encompasses every cacao-producing country (74+) and involves major importing markets. This expansion is expected to benefit more than 1.7 million smallholder farmers, organizations, and businesses across the cacao value chain.
The strategy focuses on five complementary impact pathways:
Partnerships: Fostering a community for excellence to drive food and land system transformation in the cacao sector, through multi-impact collaborative initiatives.
Innovations: Developing and adopting data-driven innovations to promote diversity and quality at origins, leading to excellence in the cacao sector and equitable delivery of income, livelihood, and social inclusion benefits to the poor.
Genetic Diversity: Safeguarding cacao genetic diversity to ensure the long-term health, resilience, quality, and diversity of planting materials.
Capacity Building: Enhancing the capacity of individuals and organizations across the cacao value chain to adopt innovations that generate value and resilience.
Awards: Elevating cacao origins worldwide by promoting and celebrating quality and diversity through a culture of excellence in the cacao sector.
